Built For Our Demanding Canadian Weather

​

Most homes in Canada are not truly built to face what our Canadian climate throws our way. I learnt this first hand when I purchased my first home and our block foundation wall was bowing from exterior hydrostatic pressure of the earth. In Canada, we have some of the largest freeze thaw cycles of anywhere in the world. The wear and tear of the hydrostatic pressure against your foundation will take its toll over time leading to failure. Even with a well done - poured cement foundation and proper grading, these foundations can still fail over time. Almost all homes are still being backfilled with earth and sand. This invites moisture to be against your foundation for most of the calendar year and over time causing foundation failure. Concrete absorbs this moisture causing many issues in basements.

We install a platon membrane on our foundations and only backfill with clear stone. This way when water makes its way towards your foundation it can never cause damages. By backfilling with clear stone, hydrostatic pressure and moisture are permanently eliminated. The water will be shed down the platon and be directed into the weeping tile and flow away from the foundation. We protect your biggest investment every step of the way to ensure there won’t be future issues. In the city, we connect to the storm drain and in the country, we make sure to have enough grading on the build to install a natural drain in addition to the sump pit and pump.

​

We also use the ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) system for our foundations. This product is incredibly innovative as it is a 5-in-1 concrete forming system that is a stay in place system, incorporating structure, insulation, an air/vapor barrier and a finish attachment (when used for a finished space).

​

Whether we build a slab-on-grade style property or one with a basement, the foundation will be built to last.
